Believe In Yourself

What is stopping you from being the player you want to be right now?

What level do you think you can take your game to?

Do you believe you can get better?

Do you believe in yourself?

I'm a big fan of looking at possibilities. This may be partly why I enjoy golf so much. Every hole, every round, every tournament provides for new possibilities. You can mess up a hole pretty badly and then turn around and make a birdie on the next. You can completely tank a tournament and then win the next. There is always that next chance to try and do better. And to do better, you need to believe you can.

Of all the things that contribute to being good at something, I believe self belief is one of the most important. You can still do pretty well having doubts with your abilities, you can get by. But if you go all in and trust that you can do what you set your mind to, that is golden.

Believing in myself is what I feel helped me the most. I go out of my way to surround myself with people that are supportive of my efforts and offer encouragement to my dreams. I didn't always realize how important this was. I had to learn this lesson the hard way. I had to create a bubble around myself to keep the negativity, shame, sabotage and cruel criticism away after having my natural self belief almost destroyed by someone close to me that I trusted had my best interest at heart but actually did not.

It took a long time to recover from that and to build my faith in myself and my game back up. I let someone shatter that in me without realizing it at the time. It took some time to sort it all out, but now I am deliberate in protecting that and my self care. I have no space in my life for people that drain me of my energy and true essence. I am grateful for never giving up on myself and not letting my self belief die.

Getting better at golf involves establishing what you want to achieve. Setting goals really involves establishing your level of self belief. When I set goals, I like to start with my biggest dream goal. What is the highest level I think I could accomplish if everything came together? What is my long shot? What is the one thing where's there's a sliver of hope to achieve if I put in all the hard work and skill necessary to reach my full potential? That's my big dream goal. To dream this up ultimately speaks to your level of self belief.

Setting your sights high opens your mind up to the possibility of achieving it. Even if you never achieve that big dream goal, you will accomplish some pretty amazing things along the way just by trying. And many of those may never have happened if you didn't believe in yourself.

Figure out what your big dream goal is, put it out in the universe. Allow for the possibility. Surround yourself with people that also believe in you. Go make it happen.

Believe in yourself when no one else will.

To build self-belief, I try to focus on my strengths and accomplishments: a good round, a good hole, a good shot. Remind myself of these successes in the past and see the possibilities to repeat them in the future.
